Textual Analysis of Music Video’s By Jaime

Rhianna-Rude Boy

Rhianna song lyrics and music video are very easy to detect that this is a R n B, hip hop genre. I would class this song as very noticeable pop as I believe that Rhianna has tried to break away from cheesy pop to create a more adult sexy video. The relationship between the song lyrics and the visual side to the video is very extreme and sexual. The lyrics are contradicted to the visual video as she is portrayed as a sexual animal. Her costumes such as dressing in outfits such as leopard print spots while straddling a toy tiger implies she is powerful and dominating. The actually lyrics to the song imply about her sexual needs ‘Come on rude boy can you get it up’ ,‘Take it’ and ‘we can get it on like BOOM, BOOM ,BOOM’ all of this symbolise sexual acts and her confidence in her body and mind to express it through song.
The relationship between the music and the visual side of the song seem to be loud and expressive. Rhianna seems to be expressing her natural heritage of being Jamaican by wearing the colours of the flag red, yellow and green. The base side of the song is strong and very powerful in the song mixed with the aggressive use of drums and other musical mixing. There is a bit of solo drum instrumental just before Rhianna goes off into the chorus ‘Come on Rude boy’ this successfully  gives a suspense build up into the chorus.  The video moves fast along with the music with a lot of effects and cuts making it look very busy and energetic. Such the effect that is used when the background looks like its been torn to reveal a new scene of Rhianna dancing with different man each time the background gets torn.

I believe the record company are aiming this music video at such a wide range of audiences. Young and older teenagers will love this sort of music as it’s fast, catchy and energetic. However older audiences can enjoy this as instead of it being rap that some older people don’t enjoy it’s singing without swearing and use of violence that does tend to put some audiences off buying and listening to the music track. This sort of video does have something different to it compared to other music videos by Rhianna. Rude Boy is have far more effects and much more stuff going on in the actual video, however this video is very sexual which is pretty common in Rhianna songs and video’s. Such as ‘Hard’ and ‘Don’t stop the music’ portray her to be very confident with her body and appearances by wearing little clothing. Such as in her ‘Hard’ music video at one point to had just tape covering her nipples.

The music video is very bright and eye catching including very special effects, the effects can even be described as ‘Trippy’ which means that it may give the audience the effect that this is what it looks like to have drug effects. By making it eye catching Rhianna herself becomes very eye catching. This does however mean she can express herself more successfully as the audience are appealed to watch her. Rhianna puts on a very sexual display by wearing little clothing, sexy clothing, seductive dancing and close up shots of her mouth and lips. By the camera at one point does a mid shot of just Rhianna face and at the last second she winks at the camera. In this case it’s a seductive wink to both sexes of the audience. By having an extreme close up of Rhianna’s breast  the audience have no choice really but to look as it takes up the whole shot.
Overall I conclude that this a very exciting and memorable song and video that work extremely well together. Rhianna was able to stay in character throughout the video by being sexy yet powerful and confident.
